Pastel ghost vintage lunchbox cake with blush and lavender piping

This pastel ghost vintage lunchbox cake brings the current soft-color Halloween look to a small two-layer vanilla cake. Blush and lavender piping frame an ivory center, while simple buttercream ghosts keep the design playful rather than frightening.

The six-inch size is ideal for a small gathering and fits neatly inside a bakery-style lunchbox container. A thin strawberry filling adds a tart ruby layer without overwhelming the vanilla crumb.

Why a lunchbox cake works

Two compact layers are easier to stack and decorate than a tall celebration cake. The frosting borders provide vintage texture, and the small ghost shapes can be piped with one round tip.

Ingredient notes

Use room-temperature butter, eggs, and milk for an even crumb. A smooth seedless strawberry spread keeps the filling tidy. Gel color gives the frosting strong pastel shades without thinning it.

Pipe the pastel ghosts

Pipe three short upright ivory mounds on top of the chilled cake, tapering each one into a soft tail. Add two tiny dark-chocolate eyes per ghost after the buttercream firms.

Success tips

  • Line both pans with parchment rounds.
  • Cool the layers fully before trimming.
  • Use a frosting dam around the strawberry filling.
  • Chill the crumb coat before adding the pastel borders.

Substitutions and variations

Raspberry spread can replace strawberry. Almond extract may be omitted for a pure vanilla cake. Mint, peach, or pale yellow frosting can replace either pastel shade.

Storage and make-ahead

Refrigerate the assembled cake for up to three days. Let it stand at cool room temperature for 30 minutes before slicing. The unfrosted layers can be wrapped and frozen for one month.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use one cake pan?

Yes. Bake the layers one at a time, allowing the pan to cool before preparing it again.

Why is my filling sliding?

The cake or frosting may be warm. Chill both layers and pipe a firm buttercream dam before adding the fruit spread.

Description

A small two-layer vanilla cake with strawberry filling, pastel vintage piping, and buttercream ghosts.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/4 cups (156 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp (6 g) baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp (1.5 g) fine salt
  • 1/2 cup (113 g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup (150 g) granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs (100 g without shells)
  • 2 tsp (10 ml) vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp (1 ml) almond extract, optional
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) whole milk
  • 1/3 cup (105 g) seedless strawberry spread
  • 1 cup (227 g) unsalted butter, softened, for frosting
  • 3 1/2 cups (420 g) powdered sugar
  • 3 tbsp (45 ml) heavy cream
  • 1 tsp (5 ml) vanilla extract, for frosting
  • 1/8 tsp (0.6 ml) blush-pink gel color
  • 1/8 tsp (0.6 ml) lavender gel color
  • 1 oz (28 g) dark chocolate, melted

Instructions

  1. Heat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two 6-inch (15 cm) round cake pans.
  2. Whisk the flour, baking powder, and salt. In another bowl, beat the butter and sugar until pale and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the eggs one at a time, followed by vanilla and almond extract. Mix in the dry ingredients in two additions, alternating with the milk.
  4. Divide between the pans and bake for 20–24 minutes, until the centers spring back. Cool completely.
  5. Beat the frosting butter until creamy. Add powdered sugar gradually, then heavy cream and vanilla. Reserve portions for blush, lavender, and ivory piping.
  6. Place one layer on a 7-inch board. Pipe an ivory frosting dam, spread strawberry filling inside it, and add the second layer.
  7. Apply a thin crumb coat and chill for 20 minutes. Add a smooth ivory outer coat, then pipe pastel shell borders and dots.
  8. Pipe three small ivory ghosts on top. Chill for 10 minutes, then add two tiny dark-chocolate eyes to each ghost.

Notes

For clean pastel colors, use gel coloring sparingly and mix each shade completely before adding more.
