Description

Buttery vanilla cookies pressed into crisp festive trees, wreaths, and stars.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened (226 g)
  • 2/3 cup granulated sugar (133 g)
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract (10 ml)
  • 1/4 tsp almond extract, optional (1.25 ml)
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour (270 g)
  • 1/2 tsp fine salt (3 g)
  • Red and green gel food coloring, optional
  • 2 tbsp small nonpareils or sanding sugar (24 g)

Instructions

  1. Heat the oven to 350°F (177°C). Set out clean, cool, ungreased light-metal sheet pans.
  2. Beat butter and sugar until smooth and creamy, about 2 minutes. Mix in the egg, vanilla, and almond extract.
  3. Add flour and salt and mix just until a soft cohesive dough forms.
  4. Divide the dough, leaving one part natural and tinting the other parts red and green with gel color.
  5. Pack dough firmly into a cookie press. Press trees, wreaths, and stars directly onto the bare cool pans.
  6. Add a few small sprinkles, then bake 7-9 minutes until the tops stay pale and the bottoms are faintly golden.
  7. Cool 3 minutes on the pan, then move carefully to a rack.

Notes

Press onto cool ungreased bare metal pans; do not line them with parchment or silicone.
