Halloween confetti cake cookies have soft, tender centers, lightly crisp edges, and a bright mix of orange, purple, and black jimmies. A thin orange-vanilla glaze adds a polished seasonal finish while keeping the cookies easy to stack and share.
The texture lands between a classic sugar cookie and a small piece of birthday cake. Sour cream supplies moisture, and a short chill keeps the rounded scoops from spreading too thin.
Why these cake cookies work
Softened butter creates flavor, while sour cream and a little cornstarch protect the cakey center. Baking powder gives lift without an alkaline aftertaste. The glaze sets into a thin shell rather than a heavy frosting.
Ingredient notes
Use jimmies rather than nonpareils to minimize color bleeding. Concentrated orange gel creates a strong glaze color with very little liquid. Full-fat sour cream gives the most reliable texture.

Control the soft texture
The dough should be soft but scoopable after chilling. Use a medium cookie scoop, leave generous space between portions, and remove the cookies when the centers look just set. They continue cooking on the hot tray.
Success tips
- Bring butter and egg to cool room temperature.
- Fold sprinkles briefly and gently.
- Chill the dough for the full recommended time.
- Glaze only completely cooled cookies.

Substitutions and variations
Plain Greek yogurt can replace sour cream by weight. Swap the orange glaze for purple or leave it white with a few extra sprinkles. Mini white-chocolate chips can be folded into the dough.
Storage and make-ahead
Store glazed cookies airtight for four days with parchment between layers. Freeze unglazed cookies for two months or portion and freeze raw dough balls for one month, adding a minute or two to the baking time.
Frequently asked questions
Why did my sprinkles streak the dough?
They were likely mixed too long. Add them last and fold only until distributed.
How do I know the cookies are done?
The edges should be set and the centers matte but still soft. Avoid waiting for browning.

Tender vanilla cake cookies filled with Halloween jimmies and finished with a thin orange glaze.
Ingredients
- 2 1/4 cups (281 g) all-purpose flour
- 2 tbsp (16 g) cornstarch
- 1 1/2 tsp (6 g) baking powder
- 1/2 tsp (3 g) fine salt
- 3/4 cup (170 g) unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup (200 g) granulated sugar
- 1 large egg (50 g without shell)
- 1/3 cup (80 g) full-fat sour cream
- 2 tsp (10 ml) vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup (80 g) orange, purple, and black jimmies
- 1 1/2 cups (180 g) powdered sugar
- 2 tbsp (30 ml) milk
- 1/2 tsp (2.5 ml) vanilla extract, for the glaze
- Orange gel food coloring, as needed
Instructions
- Whisk the flour, cornstarch, baking powder, and salt.
- Beat the butter and sugar until creamy, about 2 minutes. Beat in the egg, sour cream, and 2 tsp (10 ml) vanilla.
- Add the dry ingredients and mix just until combined. Fold in the jimmies briefly. Cover and chill for 45 minutes.
- Heat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Scoop 18 equal portions onto parchment-lined trays and flatten them very slightly.
- Bake for 10–12 minutes, until the edges are set and centers look matte. Cool completely.
- Whisk powdered sugar, milk, remaining vanilla, and orange gel into a smooth thin glaze.
- Spoon a thin layer over each cookie and add a restrained pinch of sprinkles. Let set before stacking.
Notes
If the glaze is too thick, add milk a few drops at a time; it should settle into a thin smooth layer.
